From the Manufacturer
The Nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens is an ultra compact, lightweight telephoto zoom lens with a 3.6x and 55- to 200-millimeter focal range that offers a remarkable cost-to-performance ratio. Optimized for use with Nikon digital SLRs, this lens is ideally suited for the Nikon D50 digital SLR camera.
This affordable and powerful zoom offers the performance equivalent to an 82.5- to 300-millimeter lens in 35mm format and is suitable for everything from candid portraits to sports, nature, and wildlife photography. Featuring a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) that offers smooth and quite auto focus performance, this lens comes in black and measures a compact 2.7 inches in diameter by 3.1 inches in length and weighs approximately nine ounces.
For optics, the lens employs two ED glass elements that achieve a high resolution and contrast while minimizing chromatic aberration and other forms of distortion. By using this lens along with the Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G ED lens (sold separately), photographers can achieve a focal length range from 18-millimeter wide-angle to 200-millimeter telephoto, providing a picture angle equivalent to a 27- to 300-millimeter lens in 35mm format. This range allows you to cover an extremely wide variety of subjects and shooting situations.
Note: This lens is not compatible with 35mm or IX240 format film cameras.

Mistaken identity...twice
The lens pictured on the website page when I originally ordered is not the lens Amazon sent. Nor was its replacement, despite repeated e-mails over nearly a month pointing out the discrepancy. All they've done is replace the web page photo in the last few days. I am still waiting for Amazon to send the lens pictured when I first ordered.
Low Quality, regardless pro or amateur....
Yes, the lens is sharp, but this is pretty much the only positive thing. Speed is okay and okay, you have to consider the price...
After using this lens for a while, I realized that the pictures are simply less vivid. Comparing pictures from this lens with other lenses on the same camera (D80) shows a clear difference - the pictures look merely washed out and have less vivid colors. Despite all adjustments and testing, the pictures appear of much less quality if compared in a slide show...
Okay, the price is great but who wants to have second class pictures...
For me - unusable and not (absolutely not) worth the money.
During the first few weeks of usage, I was actually satisfied. It took some time to find out that the difference is in the color quality. I then did a test and compared pictures by putting them together in a slide show.
If you have this lens, try it out and make this test - you will be disappointed - drastic difference...
Good Lens for Beginners
I'm new to the Digital SLR World. Decided to try this for fun and as a new type of stress relief. I've only used point and shoot cameras in the past. Was concerned about the potential for shaky pictures when I was reviewing dSLR cameras and lens; and I was greatly surprised with what I experienced with my first shots. Shots with this lens and my new Nikon D40 came out clean and sharp. Shots were taken without a tripod. I agree with other reviews for you to save your money and get this lens over the VR version. I found this lens easy to use, and if gave great shots for very small subjects (i.e. toy poodles) up to 20 feet away. This lens is a great companion to the 18-55mm lens.
